Advanced Family Dentistry – Latest Technology

Our San Marcos family dentist offers the latest technologies like digital X-rays, no-drill fillings, and 3-D imaging. And we have been providing dental care to families in San Marcos and surrounding communities for over 25 years.

Digital X-rays – Safer, Faster

Using X-rays to examine and evaluate the teeth for cavities and gum disease has been a cornerstone of preventaive dentistry. Digital X-rays make the process safer for the patient and the staff. Unlike the traditional X-rays, Digital X-rays require less radiation. This means that there is less exposure to the patient and less scatter radiation for the staff. The images also are available instantaneously and require no chemical processing which is safer for the environment. The image quality is greatly improved as well making diagnosis and prevention easier. The digital technology also allows for easier and faster sharing of information between different healthcare providers.

No-Drill Fillings

When a tooth has a cavity, it means a part of the tooth is diseased and needs to be removed and repaired. The removal process is usually performed with a “hand piece.” Some people refer to this as “the drill.” However, in certain cases, we can use a technology called “air abrasion” instead of the hand piece for the removal of the cavity. “Air abrasion” involves aiming a tiny stream of pressurized air with micro-abrasive particles to essentially “blow away” the diseased tooth structure. One key benefit of this procedure is that it is totally pain free. This means that thee is no need for anesthetic. This technology allows for better patient experience while allowing the dentist to repair the tooth with the same outcome.

Sealants – Decay Prevention

In preventative dentistry, the benefits of sealants are a close second to those of fluoride. While fluoride is incorporated into the tooth as it is “forming” and it strengthens it from the “inside”, sealants provide a similar benefit from the “outside.” Cavities start in parts of teeth that cannot be easily cleaned. One of the most common areas is the “top” or the “chewing” surfaces of the back teeth. And this is so because of the shape and the anatomy of the teeth. Our molars and premolar have these deep grooves and pits in them. These pits and grooves are so small that the bristles of a toothbrush won’t be able to clean them. They also are a magnet for plaque which is needed for cavities to start. Dental sealants essentially seal out these deep pits and grooves making cavities less likely to start in those areas.
